Why Sodwana has coral reefs this far south

A plain explanation of why tropical coral reefs occur at Sodwana Bay on South Africa's east coast, and how warm western Indian Ocean water shapes the marine life.

Sodwana Bay sits unusually far south for a reef with such a strong Indo-Pacific character. The reason is the warm western Indian Ocean, and the tropical water that pushes south along the east coast of Africa.

The Agulhas Current changes the biological map

Warm water moving south lets tropical and subtropical marine species survive much farther down the South African coast than latitude alone would allow. Around Sodwana that influence supports hard and soft corals, a very high diversity of reef fish and larger animals including turtles, rays, dolphins and sharks.

The reefs are part of a larger protected system

Sodwana's recreational dive sites sit inside the iSimangaliso marine protected landscape. Offshore reefs, deep submarine canyons, nesting beaches, dune forest and wetlands are connected parts of the same coast, not separate attractions.

What this means for a visitor

You can dive all year. What you get on the day depends on sea state, visibility, water temperature and which large animals are passing through. That's why local operators choose sites on the morning rather than treating every reef as equally good in all conditions.
